BNP supporters Sieg Heil at BNP's "Victory Rally" in Blackpool

Four people have been arrested, all of them on suspicion of inciting racial hatred.  They included a 41-year-old man from Leigh, near Wigan, a 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, both from Widnes in Cheshire and a 21-year-old man from Wirral.

This weekend was to be the date for the BNP’s Summer School – three days of party indoctrination and brainwashing – but metamorphosed into a ‘Victory Rally’ for the party, Nick Griffin being eager to cash in on the unusually good spirits within the ranks of the BNP following the election of himself and fellow National Front-reject Andrew Brons to the EU Parliament.  Essentially the event went from learning how to do a proper Nazi Salute and discussing Mein Kampf to the Nuremberg Rally.

Around 100 people attended the demo which was organised by Blackpool and Fleetwood United Against Fascism outside the BNP ‘Victory Rally’ in Blackpool.

Protesters marched through Blackpool this weekend

MORE than 100 protesters took to the streets to campaign against the BNP.
They marched through the town centre before gathering outside the Kimberley Hotel on South Promenade, where the controversial right wing party held its annual conference for the third year running.

Around 20 police offices were deployed to ensure there were no clashes between the two groups and the event passed off without any trouble.

Jain Gawne, of the newly formed Blackpool and Fleetwood Unite Against Fascism (UAF), said: “We’ve had lots of support and when we were in the town centre, a lot of people were saying they agreed with us.”

Stephen Mullen, also from the Blackpool and Fleetwood UAF, added: “As long as the BNP keep coming here for their conference, we will keep fighting them until they’re run out of town.”

Wyre councillor Clive Grunshaw, who was also supporting the protesters, said: “We’re concerned about the BNP exploiting the recession and people’s financial problems, and blaming it on the ethnic minority people who have come into the country.

“We have to show we’re guarded against the BNP and that we have an alternative.”

A spokesman for the BNP said the conference had gone well.

He said: “The way we see it, they have every right to demonstrate.

However, it’s quite disgraceful they can pass themselves off as members of the public when they are directly linked with our opposition, the Labour Party.

“We had a very good conference and have much enjoyed ourselves.”

It seems ironic that it will now be (hopefully) the unelected House of Lords that will be the ones to stand up for our freedoms and civil liberties.

According to Home Office documents leaked to the Conservative Party on Wednesday, those applying for student loans will be forced to hold identity cards to get the funding from 2010.
Anyone aged 16 or over will be expected to obtain a card – costing up to £100 – to open a bank account or apply for a student loan.

The National Union of Students (NUS) described the revelation in the leaked National Identity Scheme Delivery Strategy document as “morally reprehensible” and said it would bog students down in red tape.

NUS VP for Welfare, Ama Uzowuru, said: “It is extremely disappointing that the government is planning to use students as guinea pigs for this scheme by forcing them to take on ID cards in order to apply for a loan.

“Besides being morally reprehensible, this plan is also completely impractical. The student loan system is complicated enough as it is, without introducing yet another layer of bureaucracy to the process. Many students change address at least once a year and would be obliged to report such changes in their personal circumstances or face a £1,000 fine.”

She added: “We would also be concerned for the safety of students’ personal information if they were forced to enter the ID card system.”

“This is blackmail pure and simple. The government has proven time and time again that it cannot be trust with public data. The only way they can implement their failed policy is by forcing people. Education should be a right not a privilege decided by handing over your identity,” said Stephen Mullen, SU President
